Rhode Island Red
Hmmm, any guesses as to where this bird was “created”? Yes… Rhode Island (and Massachusetts). But, clearly Rhode Island Red is rolls off the tounge a little easier than Massachusetts Red…. so Rhode Island Red it is. The fact that it was originally bed in Little Compton, Rhode Island is certainly adds to the justification that the breed is named as it is. The foundation sire for this breed was a black-breasted red Malay cock. It was brought over from England and like many important things in our nations history, it is on display at the Smithsonian Institution as the Father of the Rhode Island Red. We all have our place in the world!
